Some of the best and more impactful images of who you are and what you do re the ones that capture you in your natural environment. These Headshots and portrait sessions are a bit more involved that your traditional headshot. When a client contacts me about getting some images, we spend a fair amount of time talking and discussing what is the message they want to portrait. Headshots can be so powerful if done right and they are such strong portraits when they represent the individual and their skills or strengths.
First thing is TALK
We talk on the phone, over coffee or even email. I try to get an idea of what their skills are and what they want to show
Second MOOD BOARDS
We put together images of different ideas and concepts, these can be colors schemes, locations, wardrobe and even props to be used. Pinterest is a great tool to do this, but I also use Dropbox and event tear sheeet from magazines
We need to scout and find an ideal location for th shoot. This can be the studio, their house, apartment or outdoor location. It has to represent the individual and it also helps them feel at ease in a familiar or comfortable location
Thi sis when all the previous elements come together. Since we did the pre-shoot work, this is usually a matter of setting up and just work on expressions and making the images we had in mind.
Sounds a very long and daunting process, but truth is that this adds a lot of production value to a headshot or portrait session and always helps the end result. I feel that without the previous steps, the actual session will be harder and longer since we will have to figure out a lot of steps the day of the shoot.
